Background and Objective: The exploratory tympanotomy could reveal the underlying cause of conductive hearing loss with normally appeared tympanic membrane and the surgical correction could be possible through it. This study aims at investigating the pathological findings of middle ear, and analyzing the audiometrical improvements after surgical treatment with exploratory tympanotomy.
Materials and Methods: Clinical data of eighteen patients with conductive hearing loss with normally appeared tympanic membrane who had undergone exploratory tympanotomy were retrospectively analyzed. Patients with conductive hearing loss with normally appeared tympanic membrane could be categorized into two groups: traumatic (9 cases) and non-traumatic (10 cases).
Results: The major cause of the traumatic group was traffic accident, and the most common finding of their ossicular injury was the incudostapedial disruption. Most of non-traumatic conductive hearing loss with normally appeared tympanic membrane were found to result from a great variety of ossicular anomaly. In most cases, their hearing ability could be improved postoperatively based on their audiometry data of the reduced air-bone gap within 20 dB.
Conclusion: The present study afford the additional data confirming that exploratory tympanotomy should be the first line of effective treatment for conductive hearing loss with normally appeared tympanic membrane to investigative the middle ear findings and to correct them surgically.
